Let’s go back to the Fourth Symphony finale. Perharps the most remarkable thing about this movement is that it ends in rage and fury in E minor, just as it began. There is no final repose, no glorious sunburst in the major mode, as we might expect. Just listen to the ending, that brief but shattering final coda: pure rage, but classically contained.
