Oliver Messian – Quatour pour la fin du temps

O que esperar de uma obra com este título? O que esperar de uma música escrita num campo de prisioneiros da Segunda Guerra Mundial? Um grito de revolta? Desespero? Desorientação, turbulência? Isto era aquilo que, pelo menos eu, ansiosamente procurei quando pela primeira vez ouvi este quarteto.

É no entanto um grito de paz, a eterna paz que se seguirá ao final dos tempos. O próprio Messian explica:

“In the name of the Apocalypse, my work has been criticized for being too calm, too bald. My detractors forget that the Apocalypse does not contain only monsters and cataclysms: we also find silence of adoration and marvellous visions of peace. Moreover I never intended to make an Apocalypse; I began with a figure I loved (that of “The Angel who announces the end of Time”)

A final remark. My “Quartet” comprises eight movements. Why? Seven is the perfect number, the creation lasting six days, sanctified by the divine Sabbath; the seven of this rest day continues into eternity and becomes the eight of unfailing light, unfailing peace.”

Trata-se assim de um testemunho de optimismo contrastante com a maioriria da arte concebida após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, e em geral durante todo o século XX. É o testemunho de um (verdadeiro) cristão, consciente da existência de um sentido último do real, não imanente à própria história,não concretizável na dimensão em que nos movemos, mas antes fundamentado no trascendente, no que esta para lá, no “extra-histórico”.

Há algum tempo que uma obra não me entusiasmava tanto. Deixo aqui o meu andamento preferido (que se pode ouvir no fonógrafo e abaixo comentado pelo compositor).

“Extensive solo for the violin, the counterpart of the cello solo in the 5th movement. Why this second laudation?* It is addressed more especially to the second aspect of Jesus, to Jesus the man, to the Word made flesh, who rose from the dead and became immortal, giving his life for us. It is full of love. Its slow ascension to the highest notes represents man’s ascension towards his God, that of Son of God towards his Father, that of the divinized being towards Paradise”
